Newaukum Announces Name Change, New Services May 10, 2004 - Seattle, WA
From the beginning, Internet services firms have been known for interesting company names like "Razorfish," "Elephants & Ants," and "Saltmine," but Rocky Hessler, Director of Client Services at Seattle-based newaukum thinks the time has come for an appeal to prospects' traditional sensibilities, so he's changing the name of his firm.
"I really liked 'newaukum,' because it had personal significance to me," he said. "But, as we're looking at growing the business, people are going to care less and less about the name of a river that I grew up fishing for trout with my grandma."
For Hessler and the team of designers, developers, and consultants who compose newaukum, the name change was about removing obstacles for prospects.
"The company kicked off quickly with a bit of an uncertain future, and we didn't have much time to really develop and test our name," he added. "We've been flying under the radar with all of our business so far being referral-based, and growing steadily, which has been great. As we've added services like our modular web applications, and expanded our interactive Flash-based services, we're ready to look at more opportunities outside our business and social circles, so it's time to get real."
And getting real means a new name, "Viallo," which at first glance invokes images of Italian sports cars or low-fat ice cream. For Hessler, it's an improvement that will better prepare his company for growth.
"We subscribe to the 'empty vessel' principal of corporate identity, that the name means what your customers say it means, based on their experience with you. And you can make a case for almost any name, look at how many weird names there are out there for successful businesses. For us, it was about removing obstacles, plain and simple. I'm not going to B.S. about how the name was derived from Latin with a profound underlying metaphorical life-changing principle. We made it up, we like the way it looks, and how it sounds. It doesn't mean anything right now, and that's fine. The good news is, if we do our jobs, it will mean a lot of positive things to our clients."
Hessler will launch a direct mail campaign announcing the change to existing clients, offering a range of free services in his words, "to show our appreciation for their patience during the identity crisis." Newaukum will officially become Viallo on Monday, March 23rd.
